Perhaps you want a Garmin GPSMAP that can go anywhere with you. One weekend you might be boating, another weekend mountain biking. You want crossover navigator maps so you don't have to purchase separate GPS systems for every vehicle you own. Depending on your needs, there are many different Garmin GPS navigation systems, depending on what you'll be using them for.

Garmin knew that active individuals needed a reliable crossover device to help them navigate their way. In this world of James Bond caliber adventure, we find ourselves traveling by various modes in our pursuits. At the very beginning of the Garmin line of GPS maps, there are aviation navigator maps for pilots to travel by land, air and sea, such as the GPSMAP 96 or 196, for example. From those basic grey-scale models, Garmin has advanced to full-color portable devices like the GPSMAP 495 and 496, adding airport maps, pre-loaded maps, 3,000 favorite locations, traffic information services, voice prompts, satellite radio and weather.

The 60 Series is very popular for people who want a mapping handheld Garmin GPSMAP for hiking, biking and exploring. As the site says, the Garmin GPSMAP 60cx "puts the great outdoors in the palm of your hand." The high-sensitivity of these GPS devices provides you with good satellite reception even in dense foliage or deep canyons. The screen is versatile and can be viewed during night or day conditions and can even survive a dunk in the water if it's encased in the IPX7.

The built-in America auto-route base map will show you highways, exits and tide information, in addition to offering turn-by-turn directions. To use, you can connect to your computer using a USB cable to load map data or transfer routes and custom locations; or you may be able to purchase 64 MB microSD cards that come pre-loaded with MapSource maps, so you don't have to hook up to your computer at all. The Garmin GPSMAP 60 takes you from the backwoods and boundary waters to the highways with 28 hours of reliable battery life, in addition to geocaching features, games, alarm clock functionality, as well as optimal hunting/fishing times and sunrise/sunset/moon phase tables.

A Garmin GPSMAP may come in various formats. When you're on the road, you'll probably be using "City Navigator" maps, which include over 6 million points of interest, traffic data and detailed street information. When you're sailing, you'll use the "Blue Chart" GPS navigation maps with 3-D perspective, coastal points of interest, depth contours, shipwreck locations and auto-guide technology. Hikers will use the "Topo US" maps that include terrain contours, elevation information, trails, bodies of water, routable roads and points of interest.

The "T" suffix on the model number indicates that the unit has lifetime traffic included in the price (1350T, 1370T, and 1390T).

Two of these units, the Nuvi 1370T and the Nuvi 1390T have Bluetooth® wireless so you can use them for hands free calling with your Bluetooth® cell phone.

The Garmin Nuvi 1200 series debuts in June 2009. It is the latest of the long line of great automotive GPS units from Garmin.

The series consists of the Nuvi 1200, the Nuvi 1250, and the Nuvi 1260T.

All the GPS in this series are the same size (3.7"W x 2.9"H x .6"D) and the same weight (4.0 ounces). The screen size for each is 2.8"W x 2.1"H, 3.5" diagonal.

These units are twenty-five percent thinner than the previous models (0.6 inches versus 0.8 inches). With this thin profile and lighter weight the Nuvi 1200 series GPS easily fits in your pocket for walking around the city.

All three of the units in this series speak street names. This is the most important feature in an automotive GPS.

There are a few minor differences between the units in this series.

As you would expect, the Nuvi 1200 is the entry unit in the series. It has:

· 3.5 inch display (diagonal)
· Speaks street names
· Preloaded street maps for lower 48 states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico
· Optional FM lifetime traffic information
· Where am I?
· Photo navigation
· ecoRoute™
· Optional MSN® Direct

Step up to the Nuvi 1250 and you get all the features of the Nuvi 1200 with preloaded street maps for North America plus speed limit indicator.

The next step up to the Nuvi 1260T gives you the features of the Nuvi 1250 plus FM lifetime traffic and Bluetooth® wireless.

The Garmin list prices for these units are:

· Nuvi 1200 $199.99
· Nuvi 1250 $249.99
· Nuvi 1260T $299.99

These prices will more than likely drop as these units become more mature in the marketplace. This has been the trend of most of the Garmin GPS units.

Garmin is one of the top manufacturers of global positioning systems in the United States. They offer a host of products from GPS navigational product for cars, boats and motorcycles to aviation and boats. There goal is to enrich the lives of their customers through the products of navigational equipment.

Beginning with GPS units for vehicles, Garmin began using the power of the 24 satellites circling 12,000 feet above us back in 1989 when the company started making GPS navigational systems for people and their cars. Today they are making the same product, only better. Garmin has kept up with the times and increase their products as the times called for them. Today they offer the vehicle GPS navigational unit, as well as the GPS for boats and airplanes and hikers and bicycle enthusiasts.

Garmin makes a remarkable assortment of GPS navigational units for every kind of moving vehicle and person. Today they put GPS navigation equipment in personal assistant machines which is a small travel aide; a cell phone and your computer. With the personal assistant, you can download your destination and the personal assistant will 'walk' you to your destination or as you are driving, give you turn-by-turn directions to get to where you are going. The cell phone is similar in that you download your information and the voice will guide you to your destination using a map of where you are now and an arrow following you as you walk to where you would like to be. And lastly we have the computer or laptop which can be used as a GPS navigational system by itself after you have downloaded the information.

Other Garmin GPS units include those for aviation use complete with longitude and altitude and the same is programmed into the marine GPS units. Some of these units are portable and can help you get around the city or town without your car and help you find restaurants, places of interest (POI) such as parks or ATM machines; they can also help you find an address you've never been to before. Besides aviation use, Garmin makes GPS units for marine usage as well. Being able to see the bottom of the lake or river or ocean in clear form is something fishermen have been waiting a long time for. Now they can tell a fish from a rock and discover where all the fish hang out and with the routing feature on the GPS, keep going back to the same spot over and over again.

Garmin GPS units can be found through their website or on other websites throughout the Internet. They can also be purchased at electronic stores and large discount stores for cheaper than the official website address has them. Discounted Garmin's would be found on the Internet, be buyer beware, sometimes people are selling 'refurbished' or 'reconditioned' Garmin GPS units and if that is not what you want, you should ask if it is a new unit or 're - done' unit.

Dakota 10 comes with built-in worldwide basemap, so you can navigate anywhere with ease. Adding more maps is easy with Garmin's wide array of detailed topographic, marine and road maps, which can be loaded to internal memory.
Dakota 10 Features:
# Sunlight-readable, 2.6-inch color touchscreen display
# High-sensitivity GPS with HotFix satellite prediction
# Built to withstand the elements: bumps, dust, dirt and water
# Preloaded with a worldwide basemap plus has 850 MB of free internal memory for map transfers

Display type: Transflective color TFT touchscreen
Weight: 5.25 oz (148.8 g) with batteries
Battery: 2 AA batteries (not included); NiMH or Lithium recommended

The main advantage of this Dakota unit is that it is better for paperless geocaching because it does display tips. The main disadvantage for geocachers, other than you can't see the screen in sunlight, is that this unit does NOT offer "proximity alerts" like the 60CSx, this means you have to hold the unit in your hands constantly and with the screen set at its brightest setting to find the nearest cache, this is not only cumbersome but it also drains your batteries much, much faster. Any GPS without proximity alert is as close to useless as it gets.

SkyCaddie are one of the bigger players in the Golf GPS market with a number of offerings to choose from. Here we review the SG5 model which promises to be a great little GPS system from looking at its specifications and features.

The SkyCaddie SG5 comes with a clear, simple to read color display that has easy viewing in all light conditions due to its automatically adjusting back lighting system. The unit is small enough to clip on to the users belt and not get in the way while playing a round of Golf. With it's simple to operate one touch controls and clear color display it makes a handy sized easy to use GPS.

One of the biggest claims that SkyCaddie make about their Golf GPS range is that it has the best accuracy of its competitors. The reason they make this claim is that each course they include for use in their systems are mapped by "certified" experts. These people are properly trained in the use of the SkyCaddie system walking each course marking and measuring each hole for hazards and the green. They go through this process three times to recheck everything. This they claim makes their information more accurate than the satellite systems that most of its competitors use.

Another great feature of this unit is SkyCaddie's patented Intelligreen software. This allows you to measure the green from absolutely any angle of approach.

As you can see the SkyCaddie SG5 has many great features although it is lacking some of the features of its competitors. Features like shot storage and round storage. The above features are available on many of its competitors units, these are nice things to have so you can get home and review you days round and compare it to your previous rounds.

While researching the information for this SkyCaddie SG5 golf GPS review we did find some user feedback that hinted that the software and setup of the unit was not the easiest task. With many of these stating that customer support was not that helpful leaving the new customer very frustrated.

In conclusion the SkyCaddie SG5 is not the best value for dollar on the golf GPS market. The only reason we can see why this unit would be your preferred choice would be if you valued the fact that the courses are mapped by humans and therefore should in theory be more accurate.

You'll find more honest user feedback based [http://www.yardagerangefinder.com/golf-gps/skycaddie-sg5/]SkyCaddie SG5 golf GPS reviews, as well as full consumer ratings for all the major golf GPS units and rangefinders at http://www.YardageRangefinder.com

This model depends on your entries instead of an installed database, but you can download your travel data with your USB cable. You can also look for course mappers online that will enable you to plot out simple maps, which you can then load into your unit. The AA batteries you need to operate the Garmin eTrex handheld GPS unit will last a generous twenty-two hours, but as a matter of safety you should always pack spare batteries. Anyone who wants to journey out of doors for recreation or business-for instance, if you're traveling on the job and you want to hike-will find this unit invaluable.

Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts on a budget, the Garmin eTrex Handheld GPS comes with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver that locks onto satellite signals quickly and maintains accuracy even in the toughest conditions. The concept of GPS tracking is becoming more popular worldwide as years go by. GPS or the Global Positioning System is a type of global navigation satellite system or GNSS that was processed by the United States Department of Defense, which is managed by the 50th Space Wing of the United States Air Force. This is a free service that can be used by anyone and anywhere in the world, and civilians often utilize the tool for navigation purposes.

The GPS has become fully functional on April 27, 1995. The GPS is very useful for navigation functions, as well as on land surveying, scientific uses, map-making, commerce, surveillance, GPS tracking device and a lot more.

The GPS tracking system is a device that utilizes the Global Positioning System. Through this, the device will be able to determine the exact location of various assets like a vehicle or person, depending on where this is attached. This will also be able to record the location and position of the specific asset at regular intermissions. The data that was captured on record will be stored on a tracking unit. This can also be transmitted to a database on the central location or through a computer that is connected on the internet. The data can also be seen via GPRS, satellite modem or radio. This data that pertains to the location of the asset can be seen with a map backdrop on a real time basis or when the track is used to be analyzed later.

The GPS tracking system can be categorized into these three.

1. Data loggers. With the use of an internal memory, the tool will log the position of the device on regular intervals.

2. Data pushers. This kind is utilized by the security industry. It pushes or sends the data on the device at set intervals according to the server.

3. Data pullers. Instead of sending the location of the device like how it is done by data pushers, this type is always turned on so that the data can be obtained or pulled anytime.

GPS Unit Navigator downloads information about GPS satellites when you use your GPS Navigator for the first time. It normally takes up to 2 min depending on your device. The reason it takes time is that information is being downloaded into your device. You load this initial start-up of you leave your GPS Device motionless for about half an hour. It will load this information and will acquire satellite signals also known as TTFF much faster next time you use your GPS portable.

Another good tip will help you to prevent your GPS units navigator from being stolen. There are three most common mistakes GPS owner makes and if you avoid making it you'll be able to deter people from stealing your device.

Don't leave your unit in the car

Remove the suction cup from your car and wipe out windshield

Get a friction mount for your car, it does not leave any marks and never fall down like some of the suction cups.

Update your GPS Navigator firmware often. This is one of those things that people normally don't do and loose out on more efficient navigation and routs. Companies are always updating and releasing new maps, new algorithms for navigating and new points of interest. It is important to update your GPS units Navigator with firmware as often as you can especially if you don't use it often.

Plan your trip on computer and then upload to GPS. It is easier to plan your trip using Google Map and then simply upload to your GPS via "Send to GPS" command.

Before you purchase a GPS navigator, think about your driving conditions, how often you're in areas that are unfamiliar, and what features are most important to you.

Second, check out how well the system works for navigation. The best models make it easy to enter destinations and give the most helpful directions. Look for a GPS device that scored high for entering a destination. Some GPS systems will perform better than others. The higher the score the better the choice.

If most of your driving is spent driving a familiar route or running errands, you do not need a GPS system.

If you often encounter traffic congestion, a GPS system can be a big help by showing a better, less congested, route. In addition, real-time traffic information is available for a monthly subscription fee. Sometimes the information can be inaccurate due to being outdated, but is helpful most of the time.

Voice command is a worthwhile feature that enables you to navigate hands free, allowing you to enter an address or ask for a gas station, restaurant, and hospital. It's available on a few expensive units. A navigation unit that offers this feature is the Garmin Nuvi 880, but be prepared to spend some bucks.

New portables now have a rechargeable battery. Look for one that will operate for at least three hours on a charge. In addition, a rechargeable battery gives you the option to use your car plug for a different device, such as a cell phone. Some models offer an AC adapter, so you can charge the system in your house. This gives you the ability to enter your directions before you get to your car.

If you pick a portable unit, the size is important. Some models are the same size as wallet, and have a weight less than 7 ounces. While others are as large as a small book and can weigh two pounds. A 3.5-inch diagonal screen is a good size, but 4.3-inch wide screens allow more data to be displayed. The bigger screen allows easier address entry and larger, on screen, buttons.

I own a tomtom. It has a 4.3-inch wide screen, which allows it to display a lot of information. The screen displays a 3D image of the road head with an arrow, which represents your car. A voice warns you of turns ahead. In addition, it displays the distance to the next turn, your speed, the speed limit, distance to your destination, time of arrival, time to get to desired location, and total distance traveled. If you go over the speed limit, it will warn you that you are speeding. You can turn off this feature if you wish. In short, I consider the tomtom very accurate with many useful features at a great price, and would highly recommend it to anyone.

If you're looking for a way to take your exercise to the next level, then you really need to consider a GPS watch. Sure, you may be running3 or 4 times a week, and your body (and mind) are probably feeling great as you've finally pushed yourself to complete a course, never stopping to rest. That's great, a real accomplishment. And, you should be proud of your accomplishment. But, what's next?

If you're really serious about taking your exercise program to the next level, then you really need to set (and meet) goals for speed and distance when you run. And, the easiest and most effective way to do this is with a GPS sports watch.

Garmin Forerunner - A Top Choice

Garmin, a pioneer in GPS devices of any type, was one of the first to develop a GPS enabled wrist watch, beginning with the Forerunner 101. A basic GPS watch, the 101 was quickly superseded by the 101, 201 and 301, all with increased features and reduced size. Today, one of the top Garmin Forerunner choices are the upgraded 305 and 405.

The Garmin Forerunner 405 comes with a touch-sensitive bezel, is waterproof, and even has a "virtual partner" feature that allows a single runner to train against a "digital partner."

The 405 has now been upgraded to the 405CX, which features heart rate-based calorie computation (the watch can accurately determine your calorie consumption in real time). ANT, a wireless feature that can automatically transfer data from your watch to your computer is one of the upgraded features of the 405CX.

The Garmin Forerunner 405CX comes with built-in exercise programming to fit all levels of intensity.

Simple workout
For beginners, you can easily set exercise goals based on time or distance or calories. You can even program the watch to alert you when you've achieved your goal.

Advanced workout
When your fitness levels have increased, then you'll be ready for more advanced workouts, based on "stepping" your workouts. Stepping involves variable multi-discipline gym training (strength training, triathalon, etc.). The 405CX can accommodate complex exercise routines as easily as it does simple routines.

Heart Rate Workout
A workout based on your heart rate can be an extremely effective way to calculate your personal fitness levels and can ensure that you get an optimum workout. Based on your age, maintaining a maximum heart rate for a period of time is a highly accurate tool to use when setting exercise goals. The Garmin 401CX has wireless technology and can use feedback to keep your heart rate in an optimum zone.

You may be hearing increased talk about something called a GPS pedometer. This is actually a misnomer. There is no such thing as a GPS pedometer. However, let me explain what people mean when they talk about GPS pedometers.

By definition, a pedometer counts steps. Most pedometers function with a pendulum mechanism inside the case that registers with each footfall. They need to be worn on or around the hipbone, level with the waistband. That way, they can most accurately register your steps.

GPS technology, on the other hand, uses 24 satellites in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, and is able to measure distance, speed, and pace. The GPS units you may be most familiar with are used for navigation in cars or handheld units. These have additional functions including real-time mapping and navigation functions. They are able to set that store waypoints, routes, and more.

Many walkers and runners are looking for what they call a GPS pedometer. What they really mean is a unit that will use the accuracy of GPS technology to give them basic information on speed and distance. Thanks to a prudence in technology at lower costs of microelectronics, many companies are developing just such items.

Timex, for instance, has been producing units for the last several years to meet this demand. These normally come with two to four pieces: a GPS receiver that can be worn on the arm or waist, a watch unit, and the optional data recorder or heart rate monitor. The Timex GPS units transmit real-time data to the watch, where the user can see speed and distance information, along with the traditional Timex sports watch functionality.

The Timex units can still be a little pricey because you are getting a sports watch along with a GPS unit. Another company, Navman, has recently come out with a variety of sport tool units that do not include a separate watch. These are worn on the upper arm, and include a display right on the GPS receiver.

Navman has developed different units that are sport-specific. There is one for walkers and a different one for runners. There is one for skiers and crosstrainers, one for water sports, and more.

The Navman Sport Tool W300, which was specifically designed for walkers, includes all the functions a pedometer user needs, and then some. This is an ideal unit for anyone who is into walking for fitness or recreation. It gives you ultra precise measurements on the distance you have covered, your current, maximum, and average speed, and your calories burned. It also has a timer to measure the time you have walked, and uses atomic clock technology to provide you with the precise date and time.

Anyone looking to upgrade from a normal pendulum-based pedometer to a simple to use GPS unit should look into the Navman Sport Tool GPS receivers.

You don't need a clear line of sight or reflective target with a GPS golf rangefinder. Because the targets are pre-programmed, a GPS golf rangefinder eliminates the need to aim through a lens, accidentally hitting the wrong target on a hole, or trying to hit a pin with a laser beam at 200 yards.

With a GPS golf rangefinder you can get accurate measurements over hills, trees, and obstructions to any target. So you can play confidently and knock strokes off your game. Learn how far you hit your drive, 5-iron, 9-iron, or wedge with a touch of a button. Just let your rangefinder see the sky, and it'll do all the yard work for you! These units are very lightweight and can go anywhere you go.

If you play numerous golf courses you will find that on a well-marked course, one of these golf rangefinders is right on the money. A GPS-enabled golf rangefinder will not give you exact yardage to the pin but instead gives you center, front, and back of the green. With a pin sheet or flag colors to tell you approximate location of the pin, you can get a very accurate distance for your shot. The real value is when you need distance and are not in the fairway (without yardage marked by the golf staff). If you cannot see the pin, standard laser range finders are useless. This type of rangefinder does not need line of sight. Like most rangefinders, the real value is for distances outside of 100 yards. Inside of that, most of us have to use some amount of feel anyway. Plus close up, you can see where the pin is anyway. You will love using one of these units, especially if you play lots of different courses around your area.

A GPS golf rangefinder just might be the best thing you take with you to the course this season. No doubt it will be the most enjoyable and useful golf product you will use. Accurate to within one yard with instantaneous readings, a GPS-enabled rangefinder will improve your play by providing you with accurate distances and allow you to select your shots by knowing distances to various key locations on each hole. Not only does this kind of rangefinder allow you to pinpoint flag locations to within one yard on each hole, it also provides you with yardage information on distances to sand traps, water and any other point you so choose. A rangefinder like this allows you to track the distances of each shot to build a profile of your yardages for each club hit. Once you start using your new unit, you won't be able to imagine playing without it.

A GPS-powered rangefinder is such a powerful golfing tool. Before you spend any money on a more expensive driver or set of clubs you should try a rangefinder of this kind. What an advantage you will have over others in your foursome when you are using a GPS golf rangefinder.
